Liansteel has reached a major environmental goal. It is now one of the first Hunan steelmakers to pass a strict national assessment. The check was for ultra-low emissions across its entire production process. The China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) made the result public on its website on November 1.
This achievement marks a big step for the company. It shows Liansteel’s green development level is now among the best in China’s steel industry. It also provides a “Liansteel model” for the sector’s green shift. Furthermore, it highlights Hunan Province’s progress in fighting air pollution.
Liansteel is a major steel producer in Loudi, Hunan. The company has always viewed environmental protection as vital to its survival. Since a key national policy was issued in April 2019, Liansteel has acted quickly. It transformed its emission cuts from a simple task into a core strategic project. The company firmly pressed the “fast-forward” button on its green transition.
The upgrade was done in two clear phases. From 2019 to 2022, Liansteel launched 20 projects. The investment totaled RMB 1.83 billion. It focused on desulfurization and denitrification for coke ovens and sintering machines. It also upgraded their energy efficiency. Then, in 2023, the second phase began. With strong government support, Liansteel invested over RMB 5 billion more. This funded 112 key projects. The aim was to build a pollution control system covering the whole production chain.
The company used a precise and systematic approach. It set up special teams and brought in expert help. It also applied the best available technology. For example, all five coke ovens now use advanced sodium-based dry desulfurization. They also use mid-low temperature SCR denitrification. The three sintering machines have new multi-stage purification systems. A new fully automated C-type stockhouse was also built. Workers can now operate equipment remotely from a control room. This improves safety, environmental protection, and energy use. An intelligent smart platform was also introduced. It allows for accurate, non-stop monitoring of emissions. This makes environmental management much more effective.
The project also brings economic benefits. With less acid gas, equipment corrodes more slowly. This means lower maintenance costs. The company saves about RMB 2 million per year on anti-corrosion work. In logistics, new electric trucks are replacing diesel ones. This cuts transport costs.
Liansteel is also turning waste into resources. A new system captures waste gas from its blast furnaces. This gas was previously just released into the air. Now, about 82 million cubic meters of this gas is recovered each year. The system also cuts particulate emissions by nearly 400 tons. The captured gas is used to generate power. It produces about 20.5 million kWh of electricity annually. This creates roughly RMB 10.25 million in economic value. It also reduces carbon emissions by about 3,300 tons. This project is a powerful example of the company’s commitment to green development, proving that environmental responsibility can go hand-in-hand with financial gain.
